I was led out of my workplace like a common criminal, and in handcuffs as if I were dangerous. They treated me like somebody who’d tried to crack the safe or snatch a purse or who had shown up with a gun to hold the place up. They most certainly didn’t treat me like the respected member of the community and the married woman I was. As they walked me out, I closed my eyes and let them guide me, not wanting to look at all of the people staring at me.

It was terribly embarrassing, something I’d worked hard to avoid my whole life. I never drank in public, cried, or even cursed. Anything that would cause attention, I’d steered clear of for so long. I’d been the model citizen, always put together and in control of herself no matter the circumstances, right up until the moment with Joan. She, with her months of careful manipulation of me, had undone in just a minute something I’d spent my entire careful and fastidious life building. It was fortunate she had ultimately failed in her attempts to make a cheater of me, but in her failure, the evil influences she’d infected me with managed to override my self-control and I’d completely lost all composure. I wanted nothing more in this moment than to just fall over dead, rather than face the knowledge everybody in the bank had seen me reduced to a howling, wailing beast.

I wondered if they had called Mark or Mom and Pops. I had listed Mom as my next of kin on all of my employment paperwork when I was first hired. It was funny, part of me meant to change it when I got married, but with Mark always being away it didn’t make sense. I’d always thought it was better to have Mom on there in case there was some sort of emergency where I needed somebody who could be there at a moment’s notice. It was definitely not Mark, not when we were first married, and certainly not later. I shivered as I thought about it, wondering if I’d had a sudden injury or illness, would he even answer the phone when the bank called to let him know, or would he ignore it as he did all of my calls?

Pops, as much as I loved him, would have been only slightly more likely to be able to help. When he sat in front of the TV or if there was a game on the radio, the phone could ring a thousand times and he wouldn’t hear it, so I didn’t see the point of putting him down, either. Mom, however, carried her phone around as if her life depended on it and always at least looked to see who was calling if it ever rang.

At some point, the bank’s security guards handed me over to the city police. I heard them reading me my rights and asking if I understood. They took me outside and pushed me into their car and drove off.
